D-Day Prayer

As Allied forces landed on the beaches of France this day in 1944, a day we will always remember as D-Day, President Roosevelt went on the air to share the news with the American people. Below is the prayer he offered as the whole world waited to hear how this moment in history would unfold.

Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.

Hovering in the middle of the New York Times Bestsellers List is Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. I was hesitant to read this book because Cleopatra isn’t exactly an unstudied personality. More has probably been written about her than any woman of the ancient world. But the reviews were so good that I gave it a try. I’m glad I did.
