Thanksgiving

Apocryphal, Devotions, Generosity,

Gratitude

A few months ago, when I was writing devotions for Lent, I came across a Thanksgiving story that I turned into a Christmas story … and now I’m turning back into a Thanksgiving story. Well, sorta. You be the judge.

The story is in Luke 17:11-19 and (oddly) it reminds me of being a parent at Christmas.

Jesus enters a village. Ten lepers call out for healing, and Jesus tells them to head toward church and they’ll be healed along the way.

The ten lepers do this, and all ten are healed, but only one of them returns to thank …

To Be Thankful

A prayer for Thanksgiving:

Bless, O Lord,
this food we are about to eat;
and we pray you, O God,
that it may be good
for our body and soul;
and, if there is any poor creature
hungry or thirsty walking the road,
may God send them in to us
so that we can share the food with them,
just as Christ shares His gifts
with all of us.
Amen.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Several years ago I came across this prayer and have posted it every few years on Thanksgiving Day. It strikes me how this year of all years we need to think deeply about those things for which we are thankful. A prayer that opens our heart and doors to those in need seems timely and, somehow, reassuring.

Bless, O Lord,
this food we are about to eat;
and we pray you, O God,
that it may be good
for our body and soul;
and, if there is any poor creature
hungry or thirsty walking the road,
may God send them

Family,

Thanksgiving

My mother is one of those people who has every right to complain.  She’s 85-years old and her body is wearing out.  She needs a walker to get around these days.  She has macular degeneration that has taken most of her eyesight.  For a person who loves to read, loves to bird watch, and loves to watch TV….blindness is particularly painful.  The hardest part, the most difficult thing she has lived through, is losing her daughter (my older sister) to cancer about 3-years ago.  I know she’s struggled with depression in the past, though it never incapacitated her.  It’s amazing …
