PathLight 2020

The year 2020 is just around the corner. No doubt we’re going to hear a lot of 20/20 jokes this week! But in a remarkable effort of restraint (for me), I’ll avoid the easy joke. Instead, I want to share the thoughts of my friend and colleague Roger Dermody.

If you read my blog you know the work of PathLight is dear to my heart. And as much as I wanted to be, I wasn’t the right guy to lead PathLight going forward. The opportunity to bring Roger onto the team has been heaven-sent. That’s why it’s an honor to …

Buy a Book, Build a Leader

An acquaintance of mine asked if we are using my book Salvaged to help the new Leadership Institute at PathLight. As it turns out they are using it, and we had a fun conversation about how young leaders from a different culture might read my book.

All of which led to an exciting promotion idea this acquaintance is supporting: buy a copy of Salvaged and $50 will be donated to the PathLight Leadership Initiative. All you need to do is buy a copy of the book and forward the receipt to salvaged@pathlight.org. Then a $50 donation will be …

Fueling Ambition

This afternoon an email arrived from the PathLight Belize Field Director. He said 27 new first year students have been admitted to the Sponsorship+ program, the largest class in PathLight’s history. How cool is that?!?

Did you know you can help for just $35 a month? The Fueling Ambition program is designed to help these students — most of whom do not have sponsors — to get a hot lunch each day in school. We’ve all heard how good nutrition impacts a students ability to learn, so Fueling Ambition was designed to make sure even the kids without sponsors can …

PathLight Students Rule!

One of the fun parts of summer is seeing new students added to the PathLight family. I’m excited to hear the Belize staff selected 12 exceptional students for the Sponsorship+ Program. Nine girls and three boys will begin high school in the Fall, and we have very high hopes for them.

This high school class of 2018 have ambitions to become teachers, doctors, lawyers, scientists, and business managers. Our job at PathLight is to help them achieve these goals while fully developing their spiritual lives. To paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, raising up young men and women with great skills but …

Belize, PathLight,

Congratulations Rubi, the Latest PathLight Valedictorian!

Greetings from Belize. I’m here to attend the graduation ceremonies for the PathLight students, but most importantly you need to read about Rubi. She is an amazing young woman and we are proud to have her in the program.

Rubi continues the tradition of a PathLight student being at the top of the class academically. She is this year’s Valedictorian at Belmopan Baptist High School, which is one of the schools PathLight works with. Top academic honors is an amazing accomplishment for a young woman from the rural area of Belize, one of the poorest in all of Central America. …

How Does PathLight Choose Their Students?

It’s a great question. I hear it from donors all the time. “How do you decide which students receive a sponsorship?”

Truth is that we have to be selective because we have far more worthy students than we have sponsors. But this recent post on the PathLight website is a great explanation:

July 2011 Student Selection Process
This summer marks the fifth year that we have gone through the process of selecting students for our sponsorship program.

Just as our program takes a holistic approach in building the students academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, our selection process is designed to …
