The Importance of Ownership

Ownership matters to the success of an endeavor. A business, nonprofit, team, family, or just about any effort needs people who act like owners. My book Salvaged touched on this in the chapter about scaling (hint: don’t be suckered into scaling). There is a unique power of an owner compared to, say, an investor.

Hopefully, we can all agree that ownership matters.

And perhaps never more so than now, after we shut down the economy and are now starting the effort to reopen.

Right now, ownership really matters.

You have probably heard the maxim, “Leadership casts a long shadow.” Indeed …

Seven Books Better Than Mine (Though You Should Still Buy Mine)

Each year I read around 100 books. During the holiday season we all need gift ideas, and books are one of my favorite things to give or receive. Naturally, I think you should buy my book Salvaged for your friends and family! But many of you have, and, grudgingly, sigh, I hate to admit this, but there are seven books even better than mine. Here’s the list, plus a few honorable mentions almost as good. 😊

There are some great fiction books worth checking out. Honorable mentions are The Delight of Being Ordinary, We Are Legion (We Are

Belize, Junkyard Wisdom Book, Salvaged,

Input, please?

I’d love your input. If I were to lead another Junkyard Wisdom Belize trip, would you be interested? And if so, what would you like to achieve on the trip?

I’m asking because we’ve done the trip for the last two years and thinking about doing it again in 2019. Of course there needs to be strong interest to make it happen.

Check out the pictures on the website if you are curious about what we do — it’s an absolutely blast for 20-25 people.

If we do this trip I’d redo the curriculum a bit to fit my recent …

Salvaged,

Prizes!

Want to win a prize??? First, post something online with a picture of my book Salvaged and a link to the Amazon page (or any online retailer).

The post can say something about your favorite chapter.

For instance, “Loved the chapter “Bring Donuts if You’re Late” because I’m continually late!”

Or maybe, “Just read the chapter “Perfect People Make Lousy Leaders” and I could relate completely!”

But whatever you wish is fine. The chapter titles are so unique they tend to attract attention!

Second, take a screenshot of the post and send it to me. Like the one above of …

Salvaged,

Holly and Salvaged

At long last, my second book is available! Salvaged was released on Tuesday.

People have asked how I spent that day celebrating. Truth is I spent it much like I’ve spent the last several days – in the backyard muttering, “Go potty, Holly, go potty.”

Our adorable new puppy keeps us busy. She weighs less than the keyboard I’m using right now (or so it seems) and yet I’ve still begun calling her “killer” for her aggressively playful behavior. She is a pistol!

Regarding Salvaged, I want to thank some of the folks who helped make the book possible. …

Make a Small Mess

Make a small bet. It’s an organizational maxim meaning to test an idea or run an experiment on a small scale before investing significant time or money.

It’s a great practice that has saved me from big mistakes.

One of the chapters I didn’t write for Salvaged was Make a Small Mess. It’s the same principle, but in a distinctively junkyard mindset. Whatever you might do is likely to create a mess. So keep it small. See if the results are worth the mess. Experiment with a small mess before making a really BIG mess.

Pretty cool idea, don’t you …

Salvaged,

Salvaged Videos

D’Aun and I made five short videos to promote my new book Salvaged and I thought you’d enjoy seeing them.

Obviously we’re not professional actors — and it shows — but the videos capture the whimsy of the book and I hope they make you laugh. As I wrote in the introduction of Salvaged, “There is a clarity that comes in those moments when we relax, let down our guard, and simply laugh out loud at the silliness of it all — and God laughs with us in those moments.”

Each of the five videos are based on a …
