PathLight 2020

The year 2020 is just around the corner. No doubt we’re going to hear a lot of 20/20 jokes this week! But in a remarkable effort of restraint (for me), I’ll avoid the easy joke. Instead, I want to share the thoughts of my friend and colleague Roger Dermody.

If you read my blog you know the work of PathLight is dear to my heart. And as much as I wanted to be, I wasn’t the right guy to lead PathLight going forward. The opportunity to bring Roger onto the team has been heaven-sent. That’s why it’s an honor to …

Jaguar Creek

Nearly twenty years ago we had an idea to create a research and education center in the middle of the Belizean rainforest.  With the help of friends, family, the people of Belize, and of course a large dose of God-induced serendipity, it all came together in 1994.  Since then Jaguar Creek has been used in incredible ways.  Sitting on 700-acres of pristine rainforest, adjacent to another 1200-acres of protected lands and a National Park, it has been like a second home to my family.  Today it is part of the PathLight ministry and serves as a base for educational programs, …

Kids and Prayer

Next month I will be visiting London for a few days and connecting with friends at 24-7 Prayer. One of the programs that originated from 24-7 is Prayer Spaces in Schools. I posted their teaser video earlier but thought the full version is also worth posting (it’s below).

I am excited about the possibilities of these prayer spaces in schools. A child seems to have an intuitive understanding of prayer that adults lose. Perhaps this is because they are more vulnerable, more willing to rely on others, and more willing to accept the mystery of God. Whatever the …

Give $30, put a student through school!

As we wrap up 2011, a long-time supporter of PathLight has given a unique matching gift opportunity. The goal? To send one student to school. While that may not seem like much, consider this: PathLight’s program provides after-school tutoring, mentoring, and encouragement of faith in Christ. The effect of nurturing the whole person is what allows these children to become leaders in their communities. That one child we send to school could be a leader who transforms their village and inspires the next generation.

So here’s what we’re asking: If you can spare $30 for a student in need, your …

Annual Christmas Post

Two years ago I sent a letter to friends of PathLight, and it was so well received that I reposted it last Christmas. It seems to still strike a chord, so I’m posting it again. Consider it as my Christmas wish to you. I hope you enjoy it.

David L. Fleming writes, “The son of God became poor by becoming incarnate. He embraced poverty in the circumstances of his earthly life. God was born in a stable manger and was given the name Jesus. His parents fled with him as refugees to escape a murderous tyrant. Later he …

Christmas Letter

I was once known for my hilarious Christmas letters. Or at least I thought they were funny. But life got busy, not to mention less than rosy all the time, and hilarity sometimes turned into the mundane. It can be hard to muster the energy to put out a Christmas letter, much less one with humor.

This year, I stepped back from the brink of seriousness and added a few light touches of humor. Nothing that will cause a belly laugh … but certainly not as serious as in the recent past. I hope you enjoy it.

Belize, PathLight,

Off to Belize!

I’m off to Belize tomorrow for the first ever PathLight International graduating class! Hard to believe it was four years ago that we selected our first group of students. They have put in a lot of hard work leading up to the commencement ceremony.

The ceremony is on Tuesday night, but our big PathLight blowout graduation party is Sunday night. It’s going to be fun to see the proud parents and excited students! Hopefully I can post pictures soon afterward.

The kids have overcome a lot of odds. Born into poverty, living in a rural setting, and attending poor schools …

Building Our PathLight Team

For the last nine months PathLight has been searching for a new Belize Program Director. The search was international in scope and included dozens of good candidates. The process took longer than we anticipated, but that’s common when it is so important to find the right person.

The great news is that an incredible young leader has filled the position. Bryant Kong is our new Belize Program Director. He and his wife Hyojung, along with their young son, will be moving to Belize in late June.

Bryant brings great passion and energy to this position. Born and raised in San …
