29 years, 364 days…

Tomorrow is our 30th anniversary. As you might expect, no blog update tomorrow! But before we turn 30 as a married couple it seemed appropriate to post an update.

D’Aun and I have had a great time here in the Napa Valley. It’s the perfect place to reflect on what we’ve tried to create in our marriage: peace, trust, rest, honesty … la dolce vita, as the Italians say.  Grape growers talk about finding harmony and balance in the grape; D’Aun and I talk about the same thing in our relationship. Corny? Well, maybe. But still true.

Who Makes Great Wine?

This week I’m going to share five posts on wine, following a simple “who, what, where, when and why” format. I’m certainly not an expert on wine, but I do know enough to post an opinion or two. So hopefully you’ll enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

The first question is, “Who makes great wine?”

For me, the joy of wine is often based on the people behind the wine. Or as Jim Denham of The Wine Steward recently said, “Wine is better with a story.” And people are the story.

Mr. Caymus

Until the 1980’s, I don’t think I had ever gone to Napa Valley. There was no reason to, really. I didn’t drink wine and it was just another farming region as far as I was concerned. Besides, it had only recently become famous for the Judgment of Paris.

But after our life-changing trip to Bordeaux, D’Aun and I knew we had to visit Napa. It was our first day of wine tasting, hopping from winery to winery. We were both enchanted by the beauty and calmness of the Valley (remember, this was before the crowds).
