An Exchange of Hope

A few years ago the PathLight staff were reviewing applications for the high school sponsorship program. One of the applicants, Jeymi, did not fit into the profile you might expect. She was older (19), married, and had a 3-year old son. Jeymi had dropped out of school for a variety of reasons, but now she wanted to go back and hoped we could help.

It was an odd situation. Most of the applicants are 13-14 years old or so. They’ve just completed 8th Grade and are looking to move on to high school. We hope that a sponsorship will keep …

Jaguar Creek

Nearly twenty years ago we had an idea to create a research and education center in the middle of the Belizean rainforest.  With the help of friends, family, the people of Belize, and of course a large dose of God-induced serendipity, it all came together in 1994.  Since then Jaguar Creek has been used in incredible ways.  Sitting on 700-acres of pristine rainforest, adjacent to another 1200-acres of protected lands and a National Park, it has been like a second home to my family.  Today it is part of the PathLight ministry and serves as a base for educational programs, …

Who Wants To Go To Belize?

PathLight’s second class of seniors will be graduating from high school on May 29, 2012 and a great trip to Belize is planned to celebrate this event. This trip is always very popular and recently a couple of slots have opened up. This is an excellent chance to learn more about Belize, to see what PathLight is doing and to encourage our new graduates. D’Aun and I will be hosting this trip, along with directors Mark and Adrienne Parcher.

The itinerary looks like this:

May 27: Fly to Belize and then drive to PathLight’s mission and conference center for dinner …

Meet the New Belize Program Director!

As some of you are already aware, the PathLight Belize Program Director, Bryant Kong, had to return home at the end of 2011 due to a family emergency. I was sad to see him go. Please keep the Kongs in your prayers as they transition back home to Korea. If you’d like to read Bryant’s personal message to PathLight supporters, please click here.

PathLight’s Executive Director, Mark Parcher, went to Belize in mid-January with plans to begin a search for a new program director. Finding a director has been a challenge in the past, and based on those experiences, I …

Kids and Prayer

Next month I will be visiting London for a few days and connecting with friends at 24-7 Prayer. One of the programs that originated from 24-7 is Prayer Spaces in Schools. I posted their teaser video earlier but thought the full version is also worth posting (it’s below).

I am excited about the possibilities of these prayer spaces in schools. A child seems to have an intuitive understanding of prayer that adults lose. Perhaps this is because they are more vulnerable, more willing to rely on others, and more willing to accept the mystery of God. Whatever the …

Give $30, put a student through school!

As we wrap up 2011, a long-time supporter of PathLight has given a unique matching gift opportunity. The goal? To send one student to school. While that may not seem like much, consider this: PathLight’s program provides after-school tutoring, mentoring, and encouragement of faith in Christ. The effect of nurturing the whole person is what allows these children to become leaders in their communities. That one child we send to school could be a leader who transforms their village and inspires the next generation.

So here’s what we’re asking: If you can spare $30 for a student in need, your …

The signature on the paper napkin

It was humid and hot, as it almost always is, and the ceiling fan was struggling to cool the restaurant. The room was noisy from the hustle and bustle of travelers coming and going through the airport. Occasionally a small airplane would take off from the runway outside. When the big jets taxied to the terminal, we could hardly hear each other.

I sat at the restaurant table with Mark and Adrienne Parcher. Our friend Mike Egusa joined us. The last few days had been spent together at Jaguar Creek in Belize, and the whole time we had talked about …
