What Can I Do? by David Livermore

Here’s a book that should make a lot of ministry people happy. One of the most common questions I get in my role as President of PathLight is, “What can I do to make a difference in the world when I have a job, a spouse, a mortgage, a house full of kids, bills to pay, etc etc?” Or said another way, how can I make a difference right where I am?

The answer is, “Quite a bit.” And David Livermore’s book What Can I Do? takes on the question with insight and an ease of writing that makes it a very approachable book. I can see a lot of ministry people (who often get this question) simply say, “Here, read this book.”

Now, it’s not really that simple. There’s a different answer for every person on the planet. And this book obviously can’t give everybody an answer. It’s a simple book in some ways and doesn’t help a guy like me that much, but then it’s not aimed at guys like me. Still, it does provide a framework for people to work through the question and land on their own personal solution. Is the framework perfect? No, of course not. It won’t work for everybody. But it’s a good strong start.

The book covers a lot more than merely attempting to answer the “what can I do” question. Livermore’s bias toward action and his passion for cross-cultural understanding permeates the book. He gives a broad overview of the challenges our world faces, from human trafficking (for which I prescribe you contact The SOLD Project) to education (contact PathLight), and the list goes on. It has the feel of The Hole in Our Gospel in that it gives a solid overview of the world today.

So if you are looking for answers to that question, or encounter a lot of people who ask the question, this is a book you should read.
