The First Rule by Robert Crais

Years ago I picked up a paperback by Robert Crais and read it on a cross-continent flight. It was a private eye murder mystery featuring the fictional character Elvis Cole. I was hooked immediately, in part because Elvis was a wise-cracking Californian. The book was the kind of fluff mystery I like on vacation: fast moving, just funny enough to bring out one laugh per chapter, and not over the top violent.

Over the years, Crais has evolved as a writer, with stronger story lines and better character development. His books have become a bit darker, more serious, not as flippant…which I am disappointed by. But I admit his later work is stronger writing than his earlier stuff. I just happen to like smart aleck private eyes, so I enjoyed his earlier stuff.

“The First Rule” is the full development of one of Crais’ regular character, Joe Pike. I won’t say much about the book because that it’s mostly predictable: bad guys from a Serbian organized crime syndicate, tough guy Joe Pike has a friend killed by accident, revengeful response that leads to a crime story that keeps you turning pages. It’s a fun read. Will it be on my bookshelf if I’m stranded on an island? No, but it’s still a nice break from the normal non-fiction stuff I read.

If you are looking for a fun mystery writer, pick up some of Crais’ books. Great reads for your summer vacation.
