The Big Burn by Timothy Egan

Interesting story about Teddy Roosevelt establishing the national parks and the Forest Service.  A huge wildfire in Montana and Idaho in 1910 turned the forest rangers into heroes, along the lines of what 9/11 did for firefighters in NYC.  Covers the legacy of Roosevelt and also Gifford Pinchot as early conservationists.

Read it if:  You are interested in the history of the American Northwest, you are interested in Teddy Roosevelt, or you want to learn more about the early years of American conservation.

Don’t read it if:  You are bored by history, have no interest in the outdoors, or have a fear of fire.
